Fiji to Welcome High-Level Ministerial Visit from Australia this Week

The Permanent Representative of Fiji to the United Nations Office and International Organisations in Geneva His Excellency Laitia Tamata, presented his credentials to the Director General (DG) of UNESCO, Dr. Khaled El-Enany.
With the presentation of credentials, the Permanent Mission in Geneva also becomes the Permanent Delegation of the Republic of Fiji to UNESCO.
With its Headquarters in Paris, the UNESCO Regional Office for the Pacific States has been operating in the Pacific for more than 40 years, fostering sustainable development in the region through its programmes in education, social, human and natural sciences, culture, communication and information.
The UNESCO Regional Office based in Apia, facilitates initiatives across 16 Pacific Member States and one Associate Member State: Australia, Cook Islands, Fiji, Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, New Zealand, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau (Associate Member), Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.
In 2022, an antenna Office was established in Suva, Fiji as part of UNESCO’s field network reform and further enhancing support to Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS).
Whilst presenting his credentials, PRUNOG Tamata reassured DG Dr. Khaled El-Enany, of Fiji’s continued support to UNESCO, commending the Small Islands Developing States (SIDS) focused approach undertaken by the Organisation. Discussions also focused on enhancing cooperation between UNESCO and Fiji, and the Pacific region, particularly in the field of Culture, Intangible Cultural Heritage, Education and Sciences.
The Director General conveyed his delight in receiving Fiji’s credentials and underscored the importance of our continued collaboration, through the Regional Office, and our active engagement at UNESCO international forums.
