Sports diplomacy plays a powerful role in advancing Fiji’s national interests and strengthening its presence on the global stage. Beyond traditional diplomacy, the achievements of our sportsmen and women have become a source of national pride, opening doors to international friendships, building goodwill and showcasing Fiji to the world.
Recognising the growing importance of sports diplomacy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade (MFAET) is looking to strengthen its partnership with the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) to promote Fiji’s international sporting interests.
This shared commitment was highlighted during a courtesy call by the FRU Executive Team to the Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Ambassador Solo Mara, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Suva on 3 November 2026.
The meeting provided an opportunity for the FRU to outline its strategic direction, development programmes and future priorities, while exploring collaboration with the Ministry to strengthen international partnerships and create more opportunities for Fijian rugby.
Ambassador Mara acknowledged rugby’s remarkable contribution to raising Fiji’s global profile, noting that the achievements of our national teams are recognised and respected well beyond the Pacific.
He highlighted sport as an important bridge for promoting peace, friendship and mutual understanding among nations, complementing Fiji’s broader foreign policy objectives.
Ambassador Mara expressed the Ministry’s commitment to working closely with the FRU, particularly through Fiji’s diplomatic missions abroad, to explore new opportunities to strengthen Fiji’s sporting network.
FRU Chief Executive Officer, Mr Koli Sewabu, acknowledged the Ministry’s support and welcomed closer cooperation to expand the FRU’s international partnerships and broaden the development pathways for Fijian rugby.
The meeting concluded with both organisations looking forward to continued dialogue and practical cooperation in advancing sports diplomacy.
For Fiji, rugby is more than a sports. It is a source of national pride and an important part of our international identity. Through the achievements of our sportsmen and women, Fiji continues to build friendships across borders, strengthen its global presence and demonstrate the power of sports in bringing nations together.
