The Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Dr. Raijeli Taga, received a courtesy call from the Foreign Secretary of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, H.E. Asad Alam Siam, on Wednesday (15.04.2026) at the Ministry’s headquarters.
Dr. Taga warmly welcomed H.E. Siam and acknowledged his distinguished diplomatic career. She reaffirmed that bilateral relations, established in 2003, are grounded in the principles of sovereignty, mutual respect, and the Charter of the United Nations. She also acknowledged the significant contribution of Bangladeshi migrant workers in Fiji’s construction and service sectors, as well as the role of the Bangladesh–Fiji Association in strengthening economic ties since its establishment in 2022.
Both sides identified key areas for enhanced cooperation, including labour mobility, agriculture and rural development, trade and investment, and climate resilience. Dr. Taga conveyed Fiji’s interest in exploring a labour mobility agreement, securing technical assistance in sustainable agriculture, and expanding trade through the import of Bangladeshi garments and fabric, alongside the reciprocal export of Fijian products. Both countries also acknowledged their shared vulnerability to climate change and the need for coordinated efforts to access climate financing.
H.E. Siam expressed gratitude for the warm reception and reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Fiji. He paid tribute to the Bangladeshi community in Fiji for their contribution to the country’s development and acknowledged the Bangladesh–Fiji Association as a symbol of enduring people-to-people connections. He conveyed Bangladesh’s readiness to formalise cooperation across labour mobility, sustainable agriculture, and trade, and recognised the shared responsibility of both countries in advancing climate action and accessing climate financing through multilateral platforms.
The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to advancing Fiji–Bangladesh diplomatic relations and exploring new avenues of cooperation for the benefit of both peoples.
