Hon. Ditoka Welcomes UN Assistant Secretary-General: Fiji and UN Reaffirm Partnership

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Honourable Sakiasi Ditoka, reaffirmed Fiji’s enduring partnership with the United Nations during a courtesy call by the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, Ms. Kanni Wignaraja, at the Ministry’s headquarters on Monday 27 July 2026.

Minister Ditoka expressed Fiji’s sincere appreciation for the UNDP’s longstanding support for the national development priorities, particularly in climate resilience, oceans governance, disaster risk reduction, digital transformation and capacity building of its citizens. He reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to the United Nations and the rules-based international order, while recognising the UN’s vital role in addressing the complex challenges facing Small Island Developing States.

Minister Ditoka welcomed the UN’s continued partnership and highlighted the important role played by the UNDP Multi-Country Office in both Fiji and the Pacific region.

Ms. Wignaraja reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to deepening its partnership with Fiji and expressed support for greater collaboration with particular emphasis within the Digital and AI space in Fiji and the Pacific.

In addition, Ms. Wignaraja expressed UNDP’s readiness and commitment in supporting Fiji in Pre-COP and highlighted key areas of interest for the event. Furthermore, she commended Fiji’s leadership in the Pacific and expressed UNDP’s commitment to maintaining its Multi-Country Office in the country.

The meeting underscored the strengthened partnership between Fiji and the United Nations, founded on a shared commitment to sustainable development, climate action and a peaceful, resilient and prosperous Pacific.
