The Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Hon. Sakiasi Ditoka, met with the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Mr. Arsenio Dominguez, on the margins of the 26th Commonwealth Foreign Ministers Meeting in London, United Kingdom.
The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation to accelerate Fiji’s maritime development priorities, particularly the modernisation of the national fleet, improvement of maritime transport infrastructure, and the advancement of safe, efficient, and sustainable shipping services that connect Fiji’s islands and support national economic growth.
Hon. Ditoka emphasised that maritime transport remains the lifeline of Fiji and the wider Pacific, underscoring Government’s commitment to upgrading maritime capabilities to better serve communities, strengthen supply chains, and enhance regional connectivity.
He acknowledged the continued technical and institutional support provided by the International Maritime Organization to Fiji and other Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in building resilient maritime systems that meet global safety, environmental, and operational standards.
Hon. Ditoka further noted that the establishment of the IMO Regional Presence Office in Suva has significantly strengthened collaboration with Pacific Island countries and accelerated the delivery of key initiatives aimed at improving maritime governance and capacity across the region.
Among the priority initiatives discussed was the development of Fiji’s Maritime Single Window system — a digital platform designed to streamline port clearance procedures, enhance data sharing among agencies, and improve the overall efficiency of maritime transport operations.
The meeting reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to working closely with the IMO to advance maritime modernisation, strengthen regulatory frameworks, and ensure that Fiji’s maritime sector continues to support sustainable national development and regional connectivity across the Pacific.
