The Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Hon. Sakiasi Ditoka met with the Executive Director of the International Sugar Organization (ISO), Mr José Orive, at the Fiji High Commission in London on 6 March 2026.
The meeting focused on the development future of Fiji’s sugar industry, including options to modernise mills, increase mechanisation where appropriate, and explore diversification into value‑added products and other sugar‑based by‑products. Hon. Ditoka underlined that Fiji’s sugar industry remains central to rural livelihoods and to historical identity of many Fijian communities.
Mr Orive shared valuable insights on global sugar market trends and examples from other countries, highlighting opportunities for Fiji in niche and specialised markets, and in using by‑products for energy and other high‑value uses. He encouraged Fiji to explore partnerships with reputable technology and investment partners and confirmed ISO’s readiness to provide analytical and technical support.
Hon. Ditoka noted that he will share these insights and opportunities with the Minister responsible for Sugar, Hon. Tomasi Tunabuna, and with relevant stakeholders in Fiji.
The Executive Director also invited Fiji to ensure ministerial‑level participation at the 68th Session of the International Sugar Council, to be held in May 2026 in Kenya, and drew attention to other key ISO events scheduled later in the year.
Hon. Ditoka reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to the International Sugar Agreement and to working closely with ISO as Government pursues a modern, sustainable and resilient sugar industry for the benefit of all Fijians.
