UNGA81 | Fiji Calls for Resilience, Regional Solidarity and Global Cooperation

Fiji has called for stronger national resilience, Pacific regional solidarity and effective multilateral cooperation in responding to an increasingly uncertain global environment.

Speaking on the margins of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, at a Luncheon hosted by Germany and Palau, Fiji highlighted the interconnected impacts of geopolitical tensions, climate change, energy insecurity, food security and disruptions to global trade and supply chains.

Fiji stressed that resilience must be built at three levels — nationally, regionally and multilaterally.

At home, this means investing in climate-resilient infrastructure, disaster preparedness, renewable energy and stronger communities and economies.

At the regional level, Fiji reaffirmed its commitment to Pacific regionalism, the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent and the Ocean of Peace Declaration, while highlighting the importance of sustainable financing for locally led resilience through initiatives such as the Pacific Resilience Facility.

Fiji also underscored that the Pacific should not be defined solely through geopolitical competition, but as a region of peace, security, resilience and sustainable development, guided by Pacific priorities.

At the global level, Fiji reaffirmed the importance of multilateralism, international law and dialogue, particularly for Small Island Developing States whose voices must remain part of global decision-making.

“Our vulnerabilities should not determine our future. Our resilience, solidarity and partnerships can,” Fiji stated.

Fiji emphasised that in a world where challenges increasingly transcend borders, our responses must do the same.
