Fiji – China Relations Reaffirmed at China’s 77th Anniversary Celebration

Fiji and the People’s Republic of China have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and advancing practical cooperation in support of peace, resilience and sustainable development.

The commitment was highlighted during celebrations in Suva marking the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, hosted by the Chinese Embassy on Wednesday 23rd September 2026.

The event was attended by Acting President of Fiji and Chief Justice, His Lordship Hon. Mr. Justice Salesi Temo, Cabinet Ministers, members of the diplomatic corps, the Chinese community and invited guests.

The occasion recognised that over more than five decades of diplomatic relations, Fiji and China have expanded cooperation across infrastructure, trade, investment, agriculture, fisheries, tourism, civil aviation, human resource development and other areas.

Speaking on behalf of the Government and people of Fiji, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade Chief of Protocol, Ms Kiti Temo, conveyed Fiji’s warm congratulations to the Government and people of the People’s Republic of China on the 77th anniversary.

Ms Temo acknowledged China as an important development partner, noting that cooperation between the two countries continues to deliver tangible benefits for communities and contribute to Fiji’s national development priorities.

In his remarks, Charge d’affaires of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Fiji, Mr. Wang Yuan, highlighted the strong momentum in Fiji–China relations and acknowledged Fiji’s commitment to the One-China principle.

The occasion reaffirmed the longstanding friendship between Fiji and China and the shared commitment to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation.

Among the key achievements highlighted included the following:

• Infrastructure: Construction of the China-aided projects, Vunikura and Korolevu jetties is progressing, while preparations are advancing for the Vanua Levu Road Upgrading Project with construction set to commence soon.
• Capacity building: More than 300 Fijians have benefited from Chinese Government-supported training programmes this year, alongside ongoing scholarship opportunities.
• Agriculture and livelihoods: Since the establishment of the China-Aid Juncao Technology Demonstration Centre Project in Fiji in 2014, nearly 3,000 local technical professionals have received training, supporting more than 3,500 families in improving their livelihoods.
• Trade: Fiji is now China’s third-largest trading partner among the Pacific Island Countries with which China has diplomatic relations.
