Bilateral relations between the Republic of Fiji and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are set to deepen with the anticipated establishment of the United Arab Emirates inaugural diplomatic mission in Suva, later this year.
This was conveyed at the virtual meeting held between the Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Honourable Sakiasi Ditoka and the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of UAE, Honourable Noura bint Mohamed Al Kaabi, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Suva on Thursday, 9 April 2026.
The meeting marked Minister Ditoka’s first official engagement with the UAE counterparts since assuming office and reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with trusted and forward-looking nations such as the UAE.
In his opening remarks, Hon. Ditoka acknowledged the significant contributions of Fijian nationals residing in the UAE and across the Gulf region, particularly in aviation, healthcare, education and security sectors.
Hon. Ditoka welcomed the planned establishment of a UAE Embassy in Suva as a major milestone for the bilateral relations between the two countries, noting that Fiji stands ready to support this initiative and looks forward to the continued high-level engagement.
The discussion also touched on developments in the Middle East region, with Hon. Ditoka reiterating Fiji’s call for a peaceful resolution through mutual dialogue, diplomacy, and respect for international law. Both sides welcomed the two (2) week temporary ceasefire and expressed hope that it would result in a lasting peace in the Middle East region.
Minister Al Kaabi reaffirmed the UAE’s strong commitment to expanding strategic engagement with Fiji, highlighting shared values of cooperation, resilience and sustainable development. She expressed appreciation for the contributions by Fijian nationals working in the UAE and underscored the importance of strengthening collaboration in areas of mutual interest.
The constructive dialogue reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to broaden cooperation across priority areas, including renewable energy, climate action, education and scholarships, healthcare, security cooperation, trade and investment, as well as digital transformation and cybersecurity.
