Fiji, UAE Look To Strengthen Bilateral Relationship

Fiji is looking to strengthening collaboration with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) across a range of areas covering climate action, renewable energy, education, trade and investment and development cooperation.

These sentiments were shared during a bilateral meeting held on the margins of the 55th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting between the Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Hon. Sakiasi Ditoka, and UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Her Excellency Dr. Noura bint Mohammed Al Kaabi, in Palau this week.

Minister Ditoka further expressed interest to enhance coordination to ensure the safety of Fijian nationals noting the fluid nature of the situation in the Middle East.

Fiji has approximately 750 nationals in the Middle East, including students, skilled workers, peacekeepers and diplomats, with a significant number in Israel and the UAE. Minister Ditoka confirmed that Fiji’s nationals in the region are currently safe and accounted for.

On the evolving security environment, Minister Ditoka conveyed Fiji’s expressed hope that the conflict can ultimately be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy, paving the way for lasting peace and stability in the region.

The two sides also discussed the UAE’s interest in pursuing a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement with Fiji, which could create new opportunities for trade and investment.

Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the Fiji-UAE partnership and advancing practical cooperation that delivers tangible benefits for the people of both countries.
