In observance of World Autism Awareness Day on 2 April, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade hosted an Autism Awareness Session at the Ministry’s headquarters, facilitated by the Pacific Autism Centre, on Friday (13.04.2026).
This year’s theme is “Autism and Humanity – Every Life Has a Value” — a powerful affirmation of the dignity, worth, and equal rights of every autistic person as part of our shared human future.
The session brought together Ministry staff and specialists from the Pacific Autism Centre for an engaging and informative discussion aimed at deepening understanding of autism, encouraging empathy, and advancing a more inclusive workplace culture.
Adding a personal and inspiring dimension to the programme, Ms. Patricia Naisara, widely recognised for her advocacy and leadership in autism awareness, joined the session as a special guest.
Ms Naisara’s engaging presentation focused on the need to move beyond assumptions and genuinely appreciate individuals with autism. She noted that every autistic individual carried a unique story, strength, and purpose, and urged communities in Fiji, across the Pacific, and beyond to continue dismantling the barriers created by stigma and silence. She further stressed that while awareness was an important first step, genuine progress lay in acceptance, understanding, and inclusion.
The session was also attended by the Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Dr Raijeli Taga, and the Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Hon. Lenora Qereqeretabua.
The Ministry remains firmly committed to fostering a workplace culture grounded in inclusion, awareness, dignity, and respect for all.
