Melbourne, Australia – 11 June 2026 – Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Hon. Sakiasi Ditoka, today held discussions with the Chief Executive Officer of Viva Energy, Mr. Scott Wyatt, on strengthening regional fuel security, supply chain resilience, and future energy cooperation to support Fiji’s economic development priorities.
The meeting formed part of Minister Ditoka’s official engagements in Australia aimed at advancing strategic partnerships that enhance Fiji’s resilience to external economic shocks and support long-term sustainable growth.
Against the backdrop of heightened geopolitical tensions and ongoing volatility in global energy markets, Minister Ditoka highlighted the particular challenges faced by small island developing states that rely heavily on imported fuel.
He noted that disruptions to global supply chains and fluctuations in fuel prices have direct impacts on transportation, tourism, aviation, shipping, electricity generation, and the broader cost of living.
The discussions explored opportunities to strengthen regional cooperation on fuel security and supply resilience, including the importance of contingency planning, diversified supply arrangements, and measures that can help small island economies better manage future supply disruptions.
Minister Ditoka also exchanged views with Viva Energy on emerging trends in the global energy sector, including evolving technologies, renewable energy opportunities, lower-emission fuels, and the policy frameworks required to support energy transition initiatives. The discussions recognised that while countries pursue ambitious renewable energy objectives, conventional fuels will continue to play an important role in supporting economic activity and connectivity across the Pacific region for the foreseeable future.
The Minister acknowledged Viva Energy’s continued investment in strengthening fuel supply capabilities and acknowledged the important role that trusted regional energy partners play in supporting energy security during periods of global uncertainty.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss future outlooks for global energy markets and the importance of maintaining resilient supply networks capable of responding to geopolitical developments and changing market conditions.
The engagement reflects Fiji’s broader efforts to build strategic partnerships that support national development priorities while ensuring the country remains well-positioned to navigate an increasingly complex global economic environment.
