The Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Honourable Sakiasi Ditoka received a courtesy call from the Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority (ISA), Ms. Leticia Reis de Carvalho, during her first mission to Fiji and the Pacific, this week.
In welcoming the ISA delegation, Hon. Ditoka congratulated SG Ms Carvalho on her appointment and wished her every success in her leadership of the ISA.
He highlighted that as large ocean state, Fiji places considerable importance in ensuring that ocean governance remains rules-based, inclusive and anchored in international law.
Hon. Ditoka reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to working closely with the ISA through the joint collaboration between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade and Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources, Fiji’s Permanent Mission in New York and the Maritime Affairs Coordinating Committee (MACC) that looks after maritime boundaries issues and other pertinent issues covered under Fiji’s Marine Spaces Act.
Further, Hon. Ditoka said Fiji looks forward to continuing constructive engagement and continued dialogue with the ISA Council and Assembly regarding technical cooperation, knowledge sharing and capacity development for Pacific states.
In conclusion, Hon. Ditoka thanked SG Carvalho for her timely visit to Fiji, particularly with important development progressed through the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement, broader UN reforms and increasing discussions around governance of the “Area”.
The discussions elaborated that for countries such as Fiji these developments increasingly intersect with areas such as marine protected areas, fisheries management, biodiversity conservation and sustainable resource use.
SG Carvalho in her remarks, thanked the Government and people of Fiji for the warm hospitality accorded to her and expressed ISA’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with Fiji and the Pacific region.
