Fiji Strengthens Bilateral Relations with the Maldives

The Republic of Fiji has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening relations with the Republic of Maldives following the presentation of Letters of Credence by Fiji’s High Commissioner to India and Non-Resident High Commissioner to the Maldives, His Excellency Jagnnath Sami to His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, President of the Republic of Maldives, on 22 July 2026.

The official ceremony held at the President’s Office in Malé, included a Guard of Honour and was followed by a private audience, during which, both sides reaffirmed the longstanding friendship between Fiji and the Maldives as Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

Discussions focused on enhancing cooperation on climate action, sustainable development, ocean governance and the Blue Economy, recognising the common challenges and opportunities shared by island nations in the Pacific and Indian Oceans.

High Commissioner Sami conveyed greetings from the Government and people of Fiji and reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to deepening bilateral engagement. President Muizzu acknowledged Fiji’s leadership on climate issues and sought Fiji’s support for the Maldives’ candidature to host the 31st United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31).

During the visit, High Commissioner Sami also met Minister of Foreign Affairs, Her Excellency Iruthisham Adam, and Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, Honourable Ali Shareef.

The meetings explored opportunities to strengthen cooperation in: climate change adaptation; ocean governance; fisheries; renewable energy; tourism; education and capacity building.

The Maldivian Ministers welcomed closer engagement with Fiji and reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation through practical initiatives and technical collaboration. The discussions also recognised the longstanding educational links between the two countries, including the contribution of the University of the South Pacific to the education of Maldivian officials.

High Commissioner Sami reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to working closely with the Maldives to advance the interests of Small Island Developing States and promote sustainable development and climate resilience.

The visit marks another important milestone in Fiji’s engagement with partners across the Indian Ocean and reflects the Government’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic partnerships that advance Fiji’s foreign policy priorities and national interests.
