Fiji and New Zealand have reaffirmed their enduring partnership with the signing of the refreshed Duavata Partnership 2026–2030 in Auckland, New Zealand marking a milestone in the two countries’ bilateral relationship.
Signed by Fiji’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Honourable Sakiasi Ditoka, and New Zealand’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Honourable Winston Peters, Hon. Ditoka welcomed the signing of the refreshed Partnership as an important step in advancing one of Fiji’s closest relationship.
This landmark five-year agreement succeeds the initial 2022–2025 framework, elevating the strategic relationship to new heights. Anchored in the spirit of “Duavata”—the Fijian word for “working together” or “partnership”—the renewed framework outlines a joint commitment to building a more resilient, secure, and prosperous Blue Pacific Continent.
Both Ministers welcomed the continued growth in bilateral trade, which has reached FJD $1.9 billion, and reaffirmed their shared ambition of achieving FJD $2 billion in two-way trade by 2030; reaffirming support for Pacific-led solutions to regional priorities and collective action in addressing shared challenges, including climate change, transnational crime, maritime security, disaster preparedness, and sustainable economic development.
The signing of the refreshed agreement comes at a critical juncture for regional diplomacy. Both nations have reiterated their dedication to the Pacific Islands Forum’s 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent and the Ocean of Peace, emphasizing that bilateral cooperation under the Duavata Partnership will continue to bolster wider regional solidarity, peace, and sustainable development.
About the Duavata Partnership
First signed in March 2022, the Duavata Partnership is the principal framework guiding Fiji–New Zealand bilateral relations, mutual accountability and high-level engagement. The refreshed 2026–2030 Duavata Partnership builds on the success of the inaugural agreement and sets a renewed strategic direction for cooperation over the next five years.
