The Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Dr. Raijeli Taga today received a courtesy call from the newly appointed International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Country Director and Representative for the Pacific Island Countries, Ms. Mariatu Kamara at the Ministry’s headquarters.
Dr. Taga congratulated Ms. Kamara on her appointment and welcomed her to Fiji, noting the country’s role as the hub for regional and international organisations in the Pacific and the importance the Government places on fostering strong relations with its development partners.
The meeting provided an opportunity for both parties to reflect on the longstanding partnership between the Government of Fiji and IFAD, spanning more than 40 years, and to discuss avenues for continued collaboration in support of agricultural development, rural livelihoods, and food security across Fiji and the wider Pacific region.
Dr. Taga commended IFAD for its ongoing projects and support to Fiji since the establishment of its Pacific Country Office in 2023, including the recent launch of the Blue Economy and Green Community Development Programme (BE-GREEN), which supports rural communities across Vanua Levu. She reaffirmed the Government of Fiji’s appreciation for IFAD’s continued engagement, particularly in rural-agricultural development and climate resilience.
Dr. Taga also highlighted key priorities for Fiji, including climate change, the rise in sea-level and the current fuel crisis situation putting pressure on the Fijian economy affecting the cost of living and transportation of goods and services to the rural and outer island communities.
Ms. Kamara, in turn, conveyed IFAD’s continued commitment to working closely with Fiji and other Pacific Island countries, noting the organisation’s ongoing efforts to support sustainable agricultural development throughout the region.
Both parties expressed optimism regarding the future of the Fiji-IFAD relationship and reiterated their shared commitment to strengthening cooperation in the years ahead.
