Fiji and Israel established diplomatic relations in 1970, the same year Fiji gained independence. Since then, the relationship has been characterized by mutual respect, occasional highlevel visits, and cooperation in areas of shared interest, particularly in agriculture, health, and development. Fiji and Israel will commemorate 55 years of bilateral relations in 2026.

The areas of assistance between Fiji and Israel have been limited only to general diplomatic relations, in accordance with Fiji’s foreign policy of ‘friends to all and enemies to none”. In 2017, Fiji and Israel signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Ministry of Agriculture and “MASHAV” – Israel’s Agency for International Development Co-operation. This MOU was gain renewed in 2024.

The opening of Fiji’s embassy in Jerusalem marks a significant milestone in Fiji–Israel relations, signaling a deepened commitment to bilateral cooperation. While the decision carries some geopolitical sensitivities, it reflects Fiji’s strategic intent to broaden its global partnerships and elevate its presence in the Middle East.
