Prime Minister Honourable Sitiveni Rabuka yesterday visited the Yokohama Port and Keihin Koyasu Shipyard in Japan as part of efforts to further strengthen Fiji’s maritime sector and explore opportunities for collaboration in shipbuilding and port development.
During the visit, Prime Minister Rabuka commended Japan’s global leadership in maritime engineering, shipbuilding excellence, and sustainable port management.
He noted that Yokohama Port stands as a model of efficiency, resilience, and forward-looking infrastructure—qualities that Fiji aims to incorporate as it upgrades its maritime services.
Theresa port executives outlined Yokohama’s disaster-resilient infrastructure, green port initiatives, and advanced vessel construction technologies.
These insights will support Fiji’s efforts to develop a more robust domestic shipbuilding industry, one capable of producing safer inter-island vessels, supporting blue-economy growth, and strengthening Fiji’s role as a regional maritime hub.
At the Keihin Koyasu Shipyard, the Prime Minister was briefed on the operations of the facilities, at the same time, explored opportunities for potential collaboration.
The shipyard is one of Japan’s well-established maritime facilities, known for its expertise in vessel construction, maintenance, and advanced marine engineering.
The visit reaffirms the strong relationship between Fiji and Japan part as both nations pursue greater collaboration in maritime infrastructure, economic resilience, and Pacific connectivity.
