Fiji Expresses Deep Sympathy Following Devastating Earthquake in Kumamoto, Japan

The Government of the Republic of Fiji conveys its deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to the Government and people of Japan following the devastating earthquake that struck Kumamoto Prefecture on 28 July 2026.

The magnitude 7.1 earthquake has resulted in tragic loss of life, hundreds of injuries, widespread destruction of homes and infrastructure, and the displacement of thousands of people. Fiji mourns with the families who have lost loved ones and extends its sincere wishes for the full recovery of those who have been injured.

Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Hon. Sakiasi Ditoka, said Fiji stands in solidarity with Japan during this difficult time.

“On behalf of the Government and people of Fiji, I extend our deepest condolences to the Government and people of Japan. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost loved ones, those who have been injured, and the many communities whose lives have been profoundly affected by this disaster.

Japan has long been one of Fiji’s closest friends and most valued development partners. Over many decades, Japan has stood beside Fiji in times of need, supporting our nation’s development, disaster resilience, infrastructure, education, health, and the wellbeing of our people. At this difficult moment, Fiji stands with Japan in friendship and solidarity.”

Minister Ditoka said he would also be writing to Japan’s Minister for Foreign Affairs to convey Fiji’s condolences and to express the nation’s sympathy and solidarity in the wake of the devastating consequences of the powerful earthquakes that have affected Kumamoto Prefecture.

“At times such as these, it is important that friends stand with one another. I will be conveying to my Japanese counterpart the heartfelt sympathy of the Government and people of Fiji, together with our unwavering solidarity and support as Japan responds to this tragedy and begins the long process of recovery and reconstruction.”

According to information received from the Fiji Embassy in Tokyo, Japanese authorities have mobilised an extensive national emergency response, including the Japan Self-Defense Forces, fire and rescue services, police, and disaster management agencies. Search and rescue operations remain underway as emergency personnel continue efforts to locate those still missing and assist affected communities.

The Fiji Embassy in Tokyo has been in close contact with Fiji’s Honorary Consul in Oita and with Fijian community representatives in the Kyushu region. At this stage, there have been no reports of any Fijian nationals being directly affected by the earthquake. The Embassy will continue to monitor the situation closely and liaise with the relevant Japanese authorities.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade joins the international community in expressing support for Japan and remains confident in the resilience and determination of the Japanese people as they undertake the challenging task of rescue, recovery and reconstruction.
