UNGA81 Fiji Highlights Inclusive Multilateralism at Ministerial Roundtable on The Future of the UN

Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Honourable Sakiasi Ditoka, participated in a Ministerial Roundtable discussion today on the “Future of the United Nations: Five Years from Now” on the margins of UNGA81.

Organized by the Federal Republic of Germany, the event brought together Foreign Ministers and senior officials from different parts of the world to discuss the future of the United Nations (UN). Allowing for different perspectives and experiences to be heard.

Minister Ditoka highlighted Fiji’s Ocean of Peace Concept and called on the United Nations to consider this initiative when addressing threats to international peace and security.

Adopted by the Pacific Island Forum Leaders, the Ocean of Peace Declaration is what the Pacific envisions as a space of peace, cooperation, collective dialogue and collective stewardship, all of which the world needs today.

Against this backdrop of increasing global tensions and complex crises, Minister Ditoka also emphasized the evolving role of the UN and its capacity to respond effectively to both traditional and non-traditional threats, including climate change.

Fiji emphasised that a UN that delivers for all is critical to addressing the challenges facing the international community. In line with the UN80 Reform Initiative, Fiji highlighted the importance of a truly effective multilateral system grounded in the rule of law, strengthened crisis prevention, and greater responsiveness to climate change and emerging security risks.

Importantly, Fiji stressed the need for an inclusive UN where all voices—regardless of the size or economic status of a country—are heard, respected and reflected in efforts to address shared global challenges.

Fiji reaffirmed its commitment to a multilateral system that is inclusive, responsive and fit to meet the challenges of the future.
