Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Honourable Sakiasi Ditoka attended a High-Level Dialogue on the Pacific Digital Economy, organised by the Pacific Islands Development Programme (PIDP) and the East-West Center.
The dialogue brought together senior government officials from across the Pacific, alongside private-sector representatives, to discuss opportunities for public-private partnerships to strengthen digital connectivity and accelerate digital transformation across the region.
With Pacific Island nations continuing to face challenges associated with limited and uneven connectivity, Minister Ditoka emphasised the importance of ensuring that Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) are not left behind in the rapidly evolving digital age.
The transformative potential of emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), to support developing countries in advancing their sustainable development priorities was also discussed.
From expanding access to digital classrooms and education to strengthening healthcare services, digital technologies can provide new opportunities to address development challenges across the Pacific as was highlighted by the Private Sector representatives present.
Minister Ditoka further emphasised the role of digital transformation as a catalyst for achieving Fiji’s national and regional development priorities, including those outlined in Fiji’s National Development Plan, National Digital Strategy, and the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent.
Importantly, participants also underscored the need to place local communities at the centre of digital transformation. Ensuring that communities are meaningfully engaged in the development and implementation of digital initiatives will be essential to ensuring that technological advances translate into inclusive and sustainable development outcomes.
