Prime Minister and Minister for Public Enterprises Honorable Sitiveni Rabuka visited the Singapore Maritime and Port Authority Operations Control Centre yesterday as part of the government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening Fiji’s maritime safety, security, and infrastructure development.
During the visit, PM Rabuka and his delegation observed firsthand the daily operations of the centre, at the same time, learned about the role it plays in managing vessel traffic, coordinating maritime communications, and ensuring safe and efficient port operations across the country.
Authority chief executive officer Mr Teo Eng Dih briefed the PM, highlighting that the organisation aims to develop Singapore as a premier global hub port and international maritime centre, and to advance and safeguard its strategic maritime interests.
The CEO and PM Rabuka also talked about the challenges faced by the sector and explored possible collaboration opportunities that can be pursued through investment in infrastructure and technology.
PM Rabuka said that Fiji is progressing in its vision to becoming the hub of the Pacific through investments in infrastructure to enhance port services, including container handling and storage, customs processing, to mention just a few.
He thanked the CEO for the opportunity to visit the facility, adding that Fiji can learn more from Singapore in terms of port infrastructure development, in ensuring the smooth movement of goods and services that are vital to our economy and the livelihoods of our people.
Fiji is planning to build a super port facility in Suva, a significant infrastructure development that could bolster our status and strategic role as a hub in the Pacific region.
He added that the development of a world-class port facility back home is anticipated to generate a lot of economic activities and transform economies not only in Fiji but in the entire Pacific region.
The Prime Minister’s site visit underscores the government’s focus on modernising critical infrastructure to support economic growth and improve service delivery across the nation’s maritime regions.
