The Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Honourable Sakiasi Ditoka participated in the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Special session of the Foreign Ministers on Friday 22nd May 2026. The meeting was convened via zoom and was Chaired by Solomon Islands Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Honourable Rick Houenipwela, with the support of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretary General, Mr. Baron Divavesi Waqa.
The Special Session followed the decision of Forum Leaders last month to invoke the Biketawa Declaration to establish a collective regional mechanism to guide the Forum’s response to the evolving crisis.
The special session provided a platform for the Pacific Foreign Ministers to share national experiences and the growing pressures facing Pacific communities because of rising energy costs, fuel supply uncertainty, and wider disruptions linked to the Middle East conflict. It highlighted the region’s commitment to building an effective regional response mechanism that advances the aspirations of the Blue Pacific region.
In updating Fiji’s efforts to navigate the current crises, Hon. Ditoka highlighted the Pacific region’s ongoing vulnerability to external shocks and reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to the Regional Response Mechanism in tackling the fuel crisis and its economic impact on Pacific Island Countries. He underscored the importance of stronger regional cooperation, practical solutions, and deeper partnerships to build resilience against rising geopolitical tensions and global uncertainties that continue to challenge economies and security worldwide.
Foreign Ministers endorsed the regional response mechanism to the emerging energy crisis affecting Pacific economies, communities, and essential services.
Fiji remains committed to work closely with Pacific leaders and regional partners to ensure a peaceful, secure, and prosperous future for all Pacific peoples.
