The Permanent Secretary of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Dr. Raijeli Taga, chaired a focused Trade Development Committee (TDC) on Kava Trade at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade on 22 July 2026.
The meeting brought together representatives from across Government, the kava industry and academia to foster constructive dialogue and strengthen collaboration on the future development of Fiji’s kava sector. The discussions reflected a shared commitment to ensuring that Fiji’s regulatory and trade frameworks continue to support a competitive, resilient and internationally recognised kava industry.
In her opening remarks, Dr. Taga underscored the importance of a coordinated, evidence-based and whole-of-government approach to addressing emerging issues affecting the sector. She highlighted the value of open engagement between Government, industry and research institutions in supporting sustainable growth, maintaining market confidence and positioning Fiji to capitalise on expanding global demand for kava.
The meeting provided members with updates on:
recent scientific findings relating to kava;
the potential implications of these findings for Fiji’s regulatory framework; and
Fiji’s participation in regional kava governance mechanisms, including the Forum Kava Working Group and its Technical Working Groups.
Members also held constructive discussions on a range of trade-related issues affecting the sector, including the clearance of imported consignments and the practical implications for businesses. These discussions enabled agencies and stakeholders to better understand the operational and regulatory considerations involved, while identifying opportunities to enhance coordination and improve trade facilitation.
The meeting concluded with a strong collective commitment to continue working in partnership to address emerging challenges, strengthen Fiji’s regulatory and market access framework, and advance initiatives that will support the long-term growth, competitiveness and international success of Fiji’s kava industry.
