Fiji was represented at the third China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers’ Meeting convened in Xiamen, Fujian Province, People’s Republic of China from 28 to 29 May 2025.
The Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Lenora Qereqeretabua attended the meeting, which aimed to strengthen the regional cooperation and relations between the Pacific Island Countries and the People’s Republic of China. Fiji is among the 10 other Pacific countries that have diplomatic relations with China, represented at this meeting.
The meeting was chaired by China’s Foreign Minister, Mr Wang Yi, also a Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and co-chaired by the President of the Republic of Kiribati, H.E Taneti Maamau. It focused on strengthening cooperations between China and the Pacific Island Countries particularly in areas of common interest such as climate change, economic development and sustainable development exchanges.
In her opening remarks, Hon. Qereqeretabua acknowledged the People’s Republic of China for organizing the event, allowing Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers to come together and deliberate on common issues of mutual interest, strengthening regional cooperation between China and the Pacific.
Hon. Qereqeretabua reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to the One China Principle, which has been the cornerstone of the Republic of Fiji and the People’s Republic of China diplomatic engagements for the past 50 years. She acknowledged the warm and friendly partnership progressed over the years based on mutual trust and mutual respect.
Assistant Minister Qereqeretabua further expressed Fiji’s deep appreciation to the People’s Republic of China for its significant contributions to assisting Pacific Island Countries in advancing the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent and supporting our efforts towards the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Fiji Embassy in Beijing, China continues to work closely with the People’s Republic of China in promoting the common interests and development priorities of the two nations.
The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment by the Pacific Island nations to strengthen regional cooperation with the People’s Republic of China.
