Wallis and Futuna High-Level Delegation Strengthens Education and Development Ties in Fiji

Fiji is participating in the 13th Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development (APFSD) at the United Nations Conference Centre (UNCC) in Bangkok, Thailand, under the theme: “Transformative, equitable, innovative and coordinated actions for the 2030 Agenda and its SDGs for a sustainable future for all.”
Convened annually by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), the Forum serves as a key regional platform to review progress on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
In alignment with the focus of the 2026 High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), this year’s APFSD review focuses on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
Leading Fiji’s delegation, Fiji’s High Commissioner to Malaysia and Permanent Representative to UNESCAP, His Excellency Ratu Etueni Qiolele Caucau emphasised that Fiji’s priority is strengthening the effectiveness, coordination and impact of national SDG implementation.
He noted that Pacific Small Island Developing States face heightened vulnerabilities arising from climate change, economic shocks and structural constraints, making accelerated and better-coordinated action essential.
Fiji is therefore advancing stronger whole -of-government policy alignment, innovative and blended financing to address funding gaps, greater use of science, technology and digital systems to improve delivery, enhanced statistical capacity to close persistent data gaps, and deeper strategic partnerships to maximise development impact.
The Forum also supports countries preparing Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs) at the 2026 HLPF. Fiji, having presented its VNRs in 2019 and 2023, is preparing for a future review with a renewed emphasis on measurable outcomes and implementation effectiveness.
Fiji reaffirmed its commitment to strengthened regional cooperation and integrated development planning to accelerate SDG delivery and secure a sustainable and resilient future for all. Fiji’s delegation includes officials from the Ministry of Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, reflecting a coordinated national approach.
