Fiji and Vanuatu today formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on development cooperation, which aims to enhance trade and investment opportunities and strengthen collaboration in key sectors including labour mobility, agriculture, tourism, and infrastructure.
The signing ceremony took place at the margins of the 54th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in Honiara, Solomon Islands.
The MoU was endorsed at the recent meeting of Fiji’s Cabinet.
This new agreement follows the expiration of the previous MoU in 2016, renewing the commitment of both countries to work together for sustainable growth and shared prosperity in the region.
During the signing ceremony, Prime Minister Rabuka shared that Fiji and Vanuatu enjoy a profound and lasting relationship anchored in our shared Melanesian heritage, enriched through decades of regional cooperation, and united by our mutual dedication to peace, resilience, and sustainable development.
“This meeting presents a timely occasion to reaffirm our enduring friendship and to identify fresh pathways for collaboration that advance the well-being of our people and strengthen our region,” he added.
“This renewed MOU reflects our shared commitment to deepening cooperation across key sectors that are vital to our national development and regional prosperity. We stand ready to work hand in hand with Vanuatu to ensure its successful implementation.”
In his response, Vanuatu Prime Minister Honourable Jotham Napat expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Rabuka for his leadership and vision, and for the opportunity to meet and discuss issues of common interest.
He said Fiji and Vanuatu continue to enjoy a healthy and strong bilateral relationship, built on mutual respect, cultural ties, and a shared vision for a stronger Pacific.
Fiji and Vanuatu officially established diplomatic relations in 1990.
