Fiji and Switzerland Strengthen Bilateral and Regional Developments

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Honourable Sakiasi Ditoka and Assistant Minister, Hon. Lenora Qereqeretabua welcomed the Swiss Heads of Mission Delegation at the Ministry’s headquarters on Thursday (07.05.2026).

The Swiss delegation included the Ambassador of Switzerland to NZ, Cook Islands, Fiji, Niue, Samoa, Tonga and Consul General to American Samoa, H.E Viktor Vavricka, the Special Envoy of Switzerland for the Pacific Region and Ambassador to Nauru, Vanuatu, PNG, Kiribati and Solomon Island, H.E Barbara Anna Gonzenbach and Ambassador of Switzerland to the Philippines, Marshall Island, Micronesia and Palau, Dr. Nicolas Bruhl.

Hon. Ditoka welcomed the delegation and acknowledged the strong and growing bilateral relationship between Fiji and Switzerland, built on shared values of cooperation, stability and prosperity. He highlighted Switzerland as a valued strategic partner and thanked the Swiss Government for its continued support, particularly in climate change and resilience initiatives. He further acknowledged Switzerland’s support through the Pacific Resilience Facility.

Cooperation has grown tremendously in recent years through common interest at the multilateral level. Fiji and Switzerland are both parties to numerous global treaties and conventions under the areas of climate change, oceans, peace and security, public health, human rights, justice and law.

Discussions during the meeting focused on opportunities to further strengthen cooperation in humanitarian assistance, disaster risk reduction, anti-corruption initiatives, trade, climate resilience, sustainable development, peace and security,

Fiji and Switzerland established diplomatic relations in 1989.
