The Prime Minister Honourable Sitiveni Rabuka held a bilateral meeting with Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs Senator the Honourable Penny Wong and Australian Minister for Pacific Island Affairs and Minister for Defence Industry, Honourable Pat Conroy MP at the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) at Government Buildings in Suva, Wednesday 6th May 2026.
Minister Wong and Minister Conroy are in Fiji for a three-day official visit aimed at setting a renewed direction for strengthened bilateral relations and regional cooperation.
PM Rabuka welcomed Minister Wong and Minister Conroy and their delegation to Fiji and reaffirmed the enduring relationship between Fiji and Australia anchored in shared values and mutual trust as embodied in the Vuvale Partnership. The constructive and forward-looking discussions focused on the ongoing work on the Vuvale Union which will operationalize the Ocean of Peace vision and will strengthen cooperation across the key pillars of economic, security and people-to-people ties.
PM Rabuka also acknowledged with appreciation Australia’s timely budget support of AUD30 million to assist Fiji in managing the impacts of the current energy crisis. The meeting further considered ongoing economic opportunities and defence and security related issues, in particular, the transnational security challenges and the growing threat of illicit drug networks. PM Rabuka provided Minister Wong and Minister Conroy with an update on Fiji’s national response, noting Australia’s ongoing support in this area.
Following their bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister, Minister Wong and Minister Conroy also met with members of Cabinet and then held a joint press conference.
The Ministers expressed their sincere appreciation to the Government and the people of Fiji, for the warm hospitality and recognized Fiji’s role as a regional leader; reaffirming Australia’s strong support for Fiji and the broader Pacific region.
