Dialogue with the WWF Director General and the International Board and Trustees (1 Dec)
Last week, Mission chargee Ms. Seruvatu joined Executive Board Members of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), at its annual meeting. Discussions revolved around the status quo on peace and security and nature, and the crosscutting impacts of geopolitical and environmental crises.
Providing the Pacific and SIDS perspective, Ms. Seruvatu reflected on the regions security frameworks including the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific, the Biketawa and Boe Declaration(s), the expanded definition of Security, and the Declaration of an Ocean of Peace, and the trajectory for the region.
From the discussions, it is clear that cross cutting partnerships play an integral part in creating crucial and scalable solutions to nature’s greatest threats, through acknowledging and addressing the “whole of a place”—its ecology, economy, governance, culture, people, and nature.
The WWF Pacific Office is a key partner in delivering community-led conservation to protect the region’s vast natural heritage, relied upon by millions of people for food, water, livelihoods and protection from climate change. Such conversations create the space to build on current successes and ensure sustainable partnerships.
Dialogue on the Nansen Initiative Protection Agenda (NIPA); in a context of UN reform and humanitarian reset (4 Dec)
The Mission was also pleased to participate at a High Level Panel and Policy Dialogue on “Disaster Displacement @ UN 80 – Commemorating ten years of the Nansen Initiative Protection Agenda (NIPA) in a context of UN reform and humanitarian reset”. NIPA represents an important moment in our collective efforts to better protect people displaced in the context of disasters and climate change.
As a steering committee member and former chair of the Platform on Disaster Displacement (PDD), Fiji joined current Steering Group chair (Costa Rica) other stakeholders at this Dialogue, reflecting on Fiji‘s progressive journey on climate relocation policies & initiatives & leading efforts on the Pacific regional framework on climate mobility & countries efforts to explore dignified relocation pathways.
Alongside the UN reform & Humanitarian reset, rising sea levels, acidic oceans & soon to be uninhabitable ecosystems, the reality of climate mobility is hard to ignore.
