The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade (MFAET), Dr. Raijeli Taga, received a courtesy call from the Republic of Palau delegation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade Headquarters in Suva, yesterday.
The delegation was led by Palau’s Ministry of Finance GIS Specialist and Land Use Planner, Ms Ophelia Johanes Ongalibang and Head of Office for the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Palau, Mr Yohan Dhanuska.
During their visit to Fiji this week, the delegation aimed to learn from Fiji’s experience on building resilience against sea-level rise, climate change adaptation, and disaster displacement. They also visited rural communities in Fiji who have been displaced due to sea-level rise and climate induced disasters.
In her remarks, Dr Taga welcomed the delegation and assured them of Fiji’s commitment to strengthen collaboration on sustainable ocean stewardship, climate resilience, peace and security.
The visit underscores the longstanding and friendly relations between Fiji and Palau, rooted in shared membership and cooperation within the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) and continued commitment to regional solidarity, ocean governance, and climate action. The Republic of Palau has been an active voice in Pacific regionalism, particularly on oceans conservation, sustainable development, and multilateral engagement in key forums.
The discussions further looked at collaborative approaches to navigate through the regional challenges, strengthen diplomatic relations and diaspora engagements, and people-to-people ties between the two Pacific nations.
It reflects Fijis continued commitment to fostering strong partnerships across the Pacific family and building on existing frameworks of cooperation to achieve shared goals on climate resilience, security and prosperity in the region – a commitment aligned to the Oceans of Peace Declaration.
