Fiji and Japan Reaffirm Strong Development Partnership

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Hon. Sakiasi Ditoka received a courtesy call from the Director of the Regional Office and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Representative to the Pacific, Mr. Sardar Umar Alam, at the Ministry headquarters in Suva on 19/02/2026.
Hon. Ditoka acknowledged UNESCO’s continued partnership particularly in strengthening resilience to disaster and sustainable livelihood projects on education, science, technology and innovation, gender empowerment, and disaster risk reduction.
Hon. Ditoka conveyed Fiji’s commitment to advancing progress in these areas, stating that UNESCO remains a key partner in mobilizing resources and technical assistance on sustainable development, democracy and peace within Fiji and the wider Pacific region.
Mr Alam congratulated Hon. Ditoka on his recent appointment and reaffirmed UNESCO’s readiness to deepen cooperation in priority areas aligned with Fiji’s development priorities.
The meeting concluded on a positive note, with both sides expressing confidence in the continued growth of Fiji-UNESCO relations and their mutual dedication to advancing sustainable development, through education, science, culture, communication and information. The UNESCO Regional Office for the Pacific States has been fostering sustainable development in the region through its various programmes for over 40 years.
