The Malaysia–Fiji Business Council (MFBC) was officially launched on Tuesday 11th August, at Ilham Tower — home of the Fiji High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The Council marks a significant milestone in bilateral relations, providing a durable platform to translate decades of diplomatic goodwill into private-sector-led trade, investment and sustainable economic growth.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade of Fiji, Hon. Sakiasi Ditoka, presided over the launch, welcoming business leaders, executives and representatives from Malaysia’s Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) and the Malaysia Investment Development Authority (MIDA).
Minister Ditoka noted that, while earlier efforts to establish the Council had not come to fruition, its successful launch reflects a renewed commitment to strengthening commercial ties between Fiji and Malaysia. He highlighted the importance of the Council’s institutional foundations, governance arrangements and private-sector leadership in ensuring that it delivers tangible economic outcomes.
The Minister said the Council would serve as a vital bridge between the business communities of both countries, facilitating partnerships and investment across priority sectors. It will also work closely with the Fiji–Malaysia Business Council, to be established in Fiji, creating a complementary bilateral business network to advance Fiji’s economic interests and strengthen commercial engagement with Malaysia and the wider ASEAN region.
The MFBC’s founding membership comprises ten distinguished Malaysian companies and business leaders, carefully selected with the support of MATRADE and MIDA. The founding members include potential investors with a strong interest in Fiji and the wider Pacific region, as well as organisations already actively engaged in the Fijian market.
The Council’s mandate includes supporting Fijian businesses seeking opportunities in Malaysia and ASEAN; encouraging Malaysian investment in Fiji; and promoting commercial cooperation in priority areas including tourism, agriculture, manufacturing, ICT, renewable energy, fisheries, healthcare and infrastructure.
Minister Ditoka encouraged Malaysian businesses to view Fiji not simply as a destination, but as a place to invest, build, manufacture and grow.
“Fiji is open for business, stable, and ready to partner with you.”
He also expressed his appreciation to the Malaysian business community for its commitment and willingness to explore new opportunities with Fiji.
The Minister acknowledged the pivotal contributions of the Fiji High Commission and FiLLiP Sdn Bhd in establishing the Council and developing the strategic framework, institutional structure and governance arrangements that will guide its work. Their contribution, he said, had been instrumental in transforming the concept of a Malaysia–Fiji Business Council into a functioning platform for sustained private-sector engagement.
The launch of the MFBC represents an important step in Fiji–Malaysia relations, strengthening the bridge between diplomatic partnership and commercial opportunity and creating new avenues for trade, investment and shared economic growth.
