The Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Dr. Raijeli Taga, delivered opening remarks at the opening of a 3 – day workshop on Treaty Law and Practice for the Pacific held at the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat in Suva, yesterday.
The workshop scheduled from 11 – 13 March, brings together regional and international experts to strengthen knowledge and capacity on treaty processes, implementation, experiences and best practices across the Pacific.
The workshop is the first of its kind held in the Pacific and is co-hosted by the Government of Fiji, the Government of Austria, the Center of International Law of the National University of Singapore and the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat.
In her opening remarks, Permanent Secretary Taga emphasized that treaties remain a fundamental instrument for managing relations between states and advancing international cooperation.
Dr. Taga noted that at a time when international law, treaties, and multilateral cooperation continue to face increasing pressures and challenges, the workshop provides an important opportunity to strengthen understanding and promote sound treaty practices across the region.
The Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum, His Excellency Baron Waqa, also delivering opening remarks, expressed his appreciation to the Government of Fiji for hosting the workshop, and to partners for their collaboration in delivering this initiative.
Secretary General Waqa, noted that the global environment is becoming increasingly complex and dynamic, marked by rising geopolitical tensions, rapid technological change, and growing pressures on multilateralism.
Over the next 3 days the participants are expected to engage in technical sessions, discussions and knowledge exchange, strengthening regional cooperation and practical understanding of treaty law and practice.
