Fiji and Germany recognised their longstanding cooperation and friendship, that has grown steadily since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1973.
This enduring bond was celebrated at the German Unity Day reception hosted by the German Embassy in Fiji, at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva on Thursday, 22 October 2026.
The occasion was attended by President of the Republic of Fiji, His Excellency Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, alongside senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, the German community and invited guests.
German Unity Day, observed annually on 3 October, commemorates Germany’s peaceful reunification in 1990, symbolising the values of peace, freedom and unity.
Speaking on behalf of the Government and people of Fiji, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade’s Chief of Protocol, Ms Kiti Temo, extended warm congratulations and best wishes to the Government and people of Germany.
Ms Temo acknowledged Germany as a trusted and valued development partner, highlighting the significance of its diplomatic presence in Suva and its growing engagement across the Blue Pacific.
She commended Germany’s commitment to Pacific Small Island Developing States and reaffirmed Fiji’s determination to strengthen cooperation, particularly as the region looks towards COP31 and advances the implementation of the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent.
German Ambassador to Fiji, H.E. Nicole Menzenbach, expressed heartfelt appreciation for the kind hospitality and friendship extended by the Government and the people of Fiji.
Ambassador Menzenbach emphasised that despite the geographical distance between the two nations, Fiji and Germany remain united by their belief in international cooperation, respect for international law and peaceful dialogue.
She highlighted the growing partnership in climate action, sustainable development, culture, education and people-to-people exchanges, acknowledging the important contributions of GIZ and Fijian institutions in strengthening resilience and cooperation across the Pacific.
Ambassador Menzenbach reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to further deepening its friendship with Fiji and Pacific partners in the years ahead.
From more than five decades of diplomatic relations to a shared vision for the future, Fiji and Germany continue to demonstrate that distance is no barrier to meaningful partnership.
