The Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Honourable Sakiasi Ditoka, received a courtesy call from the newly appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Fiji, His Excellency Kwon Young-Seup, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Suva on Monday 22 June 2026.
Hon. Ditoka congratulated Ambassador Kwon on his appointment and expressed confidence that Fiji–Korea relations will continue to deepen during his tenure, unlocking new opportunities for deeper cooperation.
The Minister highlighted Republic of Korea’s strong capacity to support Fiji’s economic development, noting its position as one of the world’s leading economies and a global leader in advanced manufacturing, shipbuilding, renewable energy, digital technology, and innovation.
Looking ahead, Hon. Ditoka reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to strengthening bilateral trade, investment, and commercial partnerships, particularly in key sectors such as renewable energy, maritime development, infrastructure, tourism, agriculture, fisheries, and information and communications technology.
He also acknowledged the Republic of Korea’s ongoing support through the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), highlighting the tangible benefits of its development programmes in Fiji. These initiatives have enhanced livelihoods, promoted climate-smart agricultural practices, and supported sustainable community development.
Ambassador Kwon expressed his sincere appreciation for the warm welcome extended to him and reaffirmed the Republic of Korea’s commitment to elevating its partnership with Fiji. He highlighted Korea’s interest in expanding cooperation in climate action, economic development, human resource capacity building, trade and investment, and people-to-people exchanges.
He further emphasised Fiji’s importance as a key partner in the Pacific region and conveyed his commitment to advancing both bilateral and regional cooperation.
The meeting reaffirmed that Fiji and the Republic of Korea’s five decades of diplomatic relations—grounded in mutual respect, friendship, and cooperation—remain strong and continue to expand into new and strategic areas.
