Fiji and India Reaffirm Enduring Partnership

Suva, Fiji | 12 August 2026 — Fiji and India have reaffirmed the enduring strength of their relationship, as the two countries marked the 80th Independence Day of the Republic of India at a reception hosted by the High Commission of India at the Holiday Inn in Suva last night.

The occasion brought together senior Government officials, Cabinet Ministers, members of the Diplomatic Corps and invited guests to celebrate India’s national milestone and the longstanding ties that connect the people of Fiji and India.

In his remarks, the High Commissioner of India to Fiji, His Excellency Suneet Mehta, expressed appreciation for Fiji’s longstanding friendship and reaffirmed India’s commitment to taking the bilateral relationship forward. He described Fiji as a valued partner in the Pacific and underscored India’s interest in deepening cooperation across areas of mutual importance.

Fiji’s Chief of Protocol Ms. Kiti Temo conveyed Fiji’s warm congratulations and best wishes to the Government and people of India on the 80th anniversary of its independence. Ms. Temo reflected on the vision, determination and sacrifice that shaped India’s independence and its subsequent transformation into a leading global force in technology, innovation and international affairs.

She also spoke to the particularly deep human connection between Fiji and India. The legacy of the Girmitiya community was woven into Fiji’s national story, contributing profoundly to the country’s social, cultural and economic life. That legacy remains one of the strongest and most enduring links between the two countries.

Fiji also recognises India’s contribution as a development partner whose support has translated into practical gains for communities across Fiji. Cooperation has expanded across education, health, infrastructure, digital transformation, renewable energy, climate resilience and skills development, reflecting a relationship that extends well beyond government-to-government engagement.Fiji remains committed to building on the trust, people-to-people connections and practical cooperation that underpin the relationship, while identifying new opportunities for partnership in the Pacific and beyond.
