The Prime Minister of the Republic of Fiji, Honourable Sitiveni Rabuka, and the Prime Minister of Australia, Honourable Anthony Albanese MP, officially signed the “Vuvale Union” and the “Ocean of Peace Alliance (Veitacini Mutual Defence Treaty)”, marking a historic milestone in the enduring partnership between Fiji and Australia at the State house in Suva on Monday 6th July 2026.
The signing ceremony held in the presence of the President of the Republic of Fiji, His Excellency Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu and witnessed by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Honourable Sakiasi Ditoka, Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator the Honourable Penny Wong, Australia’s High Commissioner to Fiji, His Excellency Peter Roberts, senior Cabinet Ministers, members of the Australian delegation; members of the diplomatic corps; invited guests; and distinguished dignitaries.
The “Vuvale Union” signifies a new chapter in Fiji–Australia relations, providing a comprehensive framework to further strengthen cooperation across key priority areas, including economic growth, trade and investment, defence and security, climate action, labour mobility, development cooperation, and people-to-people connections. It also reinforces both countries’ shared commitment to advancing regional prosperity through genuine partnership and mutual respect.
Importantly, the “Vuvale Union” gives practical expression to the Ocean of Peace vision endorsed by Pacific Leaders in 2025, reaffirming a Pacific-led approach to addressing regional priorities and challenges. Grounded in the principles of solidarity, respect, and collective responsibility, the agreement strengthens regional cooperation while supporting a peaceful, stable, and resilient Blue Pacific.
In his remarks, His Excellency Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu congratulated the Governments and peoples of Fiji and Australia on this significant achievement, describing the “Vuvale Union” as a testament to the enduring friendship between the two nations.
He noted that the agreement would further strengthen collaboration in areas of shared strategic importance, including economic cooperation, security, climate resilience, trade and investment, labour mobility, education, and people-to-people engagement, while contributing to a stronger and more united Pacific region.
The signing of the Vuvale Union and the Ocean of Peace Alliance represents a defining moment in Fiji–Australia relations, reaffirming the two nations’ shared resolve to deepen cooperation, strengthen regional solidarity, and work together towards a more peaceful, secure, inclusive, and prosperous Pacific for generations to come.
