The need for enhanced cooperation and integration is necessary to strengthen the region’s resilience against external shocks.
This was the sentiment of the Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade Hon. Sakiasi Ditoka as he chaired and opened the MSG Foreign Ministers Meeting at the BLV Talanoa Lounge in Nasova today.
According to Hon. Ditoka, there is a need for a more targeted approach when engaging with partners particularly in aligning needs with priorities. Discussion also focused on the MSG Trade Agreement, a key pillar of the region that has the potential to unlock numerous benefits for all member countries.
“It is imperative that we progress this work so that our economies can weather any challenge that will come our way.”
Hon. Ditoka also highlighted the need for a “fit for purpose” Secretariat that demonstrates operational efficiency and explores innovative ways of doing business.
“Given the constrained environment we operate in, it is imperative we make the best use of what is available for us,” he said.
Invited to the meeting as guest speakers were Mr. Peter Roberts, High Commissioner of Australia to Fiji, and Mr Esala Nayasi, Acting Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum who spoke on ongoing geopolitical, security, economic and climate pressures converging in the region and avenues for increased collaboration.
The MSG Governing Body Meeting brings together Foreign Ministers and Senior Officials from MSG Member countries, including Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, FLNKS, and Indonesia as an Associate Member.
