The enduring partnership between Fiji and India, built on mutual respect, shared history, and strong people-to-people ties, was reaffirmed during the commemoration of the 77th Foundation Day of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), held at the Suva Civic Centre on Thursday, 9 April 2026.
Hosted by the Indian High Commission in Suva and the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre (SVCC), the event reflected Fiji and India’s shared commitment to promoting cultural harmony and inclusive development.
Speaking at the occasion, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Hon. Sakiasi Ditoka, highlighted that the Fiji–India relationship continues to deepen, underpinned by mutual respect and a shared commitment to prosperity for both peoples.
Hon. Ditoka acknowledged the significant contributions of ICCR and SVCC in advancing cultural and educational exchange initiatives, including scholarships for Fijian students to study in India, as well as opportunities for members of the Fijian diaspora to reconnect with their heritage, history, and cultural roots.
He further reiterated that the enduring Fiji–India relationship has withstood the test of time and remains firm and resolute, noting that Fiji looks forward to many more years of shared success, economic prosperity, and cultural harmony. He also acknowledged indentured labourers and their descendants, the Indian community in Fiji, for their important contributions to the socio-economic development of modern Fiji.
In his remarks, the High Commissioner of the Republic of India to Fiji His Excellency Suneet Mehta, noted that ICCR alumni in Fiji have distinguished themselves across many sectors, including Parliament, the Civil Service, Education, Business, Journalism, Law, and the Arts.
High Commissioner Mehta announced that India provides 20 ICCR scholarships annually and that registration for the 2026–2027 academic session is now open, offering fully funded scholarships across a wide range of disciplines, including Engineering, Science, Agriculture, Humanities, Arts, Commerce, Economics, Law, Philosophy, Languages, Music, Dance, and Fine Arts.
He encouraged eligible students and aspiring change-makers in Fiji to apply and take advantage of these opportunities to study in India. The deadline for registration for the 2026–2027 academic session is 15 April 2026.
