Fiji and EU discuss key trade priorities on the margins of the 11th IEPA Trade Committee meetings

Fiji and the European Union held constructive bilateral discussions on the margins of the Interim Economic Partnership Agreement (IEPA) Trade Committee meeting in Suva yesterday (26.1.26) – reaffirming their shared commitment to deepening economic cooperation and sustainable development in the Pacific.

Fiji’s delegation was led by the Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Dr Raijeli Taga, while the EU delegation was led by Ms Christina Miranda Gozalvez, Head of ACP Unit, Directorate-General for Trade, European Commission.

The meeting highlighted the strong and longstanding partnership between Fiji and the European Union, built on mutual respect, shared values, and a common commitment to a rules-based international trading system. Both sides underscored the importance of the IEPA as a key framework supporting trade, investment, and inclusive economic growth for Fiji and the wider Pacific region.

Discussions focused on enhancing the practical use of the IEPA to deliver tangible benefits for businesses, exporters, and micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, while strengthening economic resilience in an evolving global trade environment. The importance of continued dialogue and cooperation in addressing emerging challenges and opportunities was emphasised.

The European Union reiterated its commitment to the Pacific and acknowledged Fiji’s leadership role in advancing regional engagement under the IEPA. Both sides welcomed ongoing efforts to expand participation in the agreement, reflecting growing interest in closer economic integration between the EU and Pacific partners.

Fiji reaffirmed its appreciation for the European Union’s role as a stable and predictable partner and its support for sustainable development, trade facilitation, and regional cooperation. The discussions also highlighted the value of continued collaboration across priority sectors, including agriculture and broader economic development.
Both parties expressed confidence in the strength of the Fiji–EU partnership and agreed to maintain close engagement to further advance shared objectives under the IEPA.
