The Prime Minister Honourable Sitiveni Rabuka today met with the United Nations Secretary-General, His Excellency António Guterres on the margins of the UNGA80, where he reaffirmed Fiji’s strong commitment to multilateralism, regional peace, and sustainable development.
During the meeting at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Prime Minister Rabuka extended his appreciation to Secretary-General Guterres for the United Nations’ continued leadership in bringing the challenges of small island developing states (SIDS) to the forefront of the global agenda.
He emphasized the importance of global cooperation amid increasing geopolitical competition that threatens international peace and governance systems.
Speaking on Fiji’s key developments, Hon. Rabuka briefed the UN chief about the establishment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, a national development aimed at strengthening democracy and social cohesion.
He added that this is a landmark, survivor-centered initiative designed to address four decades of political instability.
The two leaders also discussed strengthening the UN’s institutional presence in Fiji and the wider Pacific region.
Prime Minister Rabuka reiterated Fiji’s support for the establishment of a permanent UN House in Suva, which would serve as a hub for development, peace, and regional coordination.
In conclusion, Prime Minister Rabuka reaffirmed Fiji’s full support for the UN’s “Our Common Agenda”, the 2050 Blue Pacific Strategy, and broader global efforts to uphold peace, sovereignty, and sustainable prosperity.
In his response, Mr Guterres expressed his gratitude to Fiji for its continued commitment to the UN and welcomed the newly-endorsed Ocean of Peace Declaration.
The Secretary General thanked the Prime Minister for the meeting, stating that he looks forward to more ongoing cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
Fiji has a strong, consistent relationship with the UN, especially on peacekeeping operations, climate and ocean matters, to mention just a few.
