The Prime Minister of the Republic of Fiji, the Honourable Sitiveni Rabuka and Prime Minister Australia, the Honourable Anthony Albanese MP yesterday reaffirmed the enduring strength of the Fiji–Australia Vuvale Partnership during a bilateral meeting held following the signing of the Fiji-Australia Vuvale Union.
The meeting brought together Fiji’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Honourable Sakiasi Ditoka, Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Honourable Pio Tikoduadua, Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator the Honourable Penny Wong, Australia’s High Commissioner to Fiji, His Excellency Peter Roberts and officials from both governments.
Held against the backdrop of an increasingly contested geopolitical environment and growing regional and global challenges, the meeting underscored the strategic importance of the Fiji–Australia Vuvale Union and the Ocean of Peace alliance as a trusted framework based on shared values, mutual respect and a common vision for the future of the Pacific.
Prime Minister Rabuka welcomed Prime Minister Albanese and his delegation to Fiji, stating Fiji’s deep appreciation for Australia’s longstanding friendship and as one of Fiji’s closest and most trusted partners, also acknowledged Australia’s continued support in advancing Fiji’s national development priorities.
Both leaders acknowledged the valuable contribution of approximately 5,200 Fijians participating in the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) Scheme across Australia. They also discussed regional priorities ahead of the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Summit to be held in Palau including advancing climate resilience.
Both leaders reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening the Fiji–Australia Vuvale Partnership and to collaboratively advance Pacific priorities, promoting regional solidarity and ensuring the Pacific remains a region defined by peace, stability, resilience and shared prosperity.
Following the bilateral meeting both the leaders addressed the media during a joint press conference.
