Permanent Secretary Mara Meets UN Resident Coordinator For The Pacific Ahead of UNGA81

Fiji’s Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Ambassador Mr Solo Mara, today received a courtesy call from H.E. Mr Dirk Wagener, United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator for the Pacific, in following his recent appointment as Permanent Secretary.

The meeting reaffirmed Fiji’s longstanding commitment to the United Nations and provided an opportunity to strengthen cooperation on shared national priorities, on UN key pillars from peace and security, human rights, sustainable development and climate action.

Mr Mara acknowledged the important role of the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office (UNRCO) and the UN Multi-Country Office in supporting Fiji and the wider Pacific.

“Fiji remains firmly committed to the United Nations and to the principles of multilateralism. At a time when the multilateral system is facing significant challenges, it is more important than ever that we uphold the UN Charter, and  international law,” Mr Mara said.

Mr Mara also highlighted the need for enhanced Fiji–UN cooperation. Both sides look forward to Fiji’s effective participation in the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81) in New York next week.

In his remarks, Mr Wagener congratulated Mr Mara on his appointment as Permanent Secretary and reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to supporting Fiji and the Pacific.

“The United Nations reaffirms it’s committment to supporting Fiji and the Pacific region in advancing sustainable development, and the four Ps – planet; people; prosperity and peace. We look forward to continuing our close partnership with the Government of Fiji and supporting Fiji’s priorities and engagement at the United Nations and across the region.”

The meeting also discussed the UN House, UN80 initiative, UNFCCC Pre-COP31, cooperation under the Fiji Country Implementation Plan (CIP) 2025–2027,Country Programme Framework 2027–2030, HIV/AIDS and Peacekeeping
