The soft launch for the establishment of the diplomatic chanceries for the Governments of Vanuatu and Solomon Islands in Suva, Fiji – witnessed this week symbolizes a landmark achievement in advancing the solidarity and collaboration in the Pacific Way.
This event highlighted a shared commitment by Vanuatu and Solomon Islands to strengthen their bilateral relations and regional cooperation by establishing their diplomatic presence in Fiji.
Speaking at the occasion, Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands, Hon. Jeremiah Manele and Prime Minister of Vanuatu, Hon. Jotham Napat expressed their appreciation to the Fiji Government for its timely support for this initiative which demonstrates the true Melanesian spirit. Both the leaders acknowledged the Government of Fiji for allocating the land for the chancery – an initiative that signifies Fiji’s commitment to regional solidarity.
Fiji’s Special Envoy to the Pacific, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola while representing the Government of Fiji at this historic occasion, stated that it was during Fiji’s Chairmanship of the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) in 2013 that Fiji initially offered the land in Muanikau to all MSG countries, as a sign of our commitment to our Melanesian family.
“It is only fitting that now, as Fiji takes on the Chairmanship, we are able to have this soft launch to solidify that commitment and as a demonstration of a refreshed commitment to our Melanesian relationships.
“On behalf of the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the people and the Government of Fiji, I convey our congratulations as well as our assurances of continued support as you move towards building your respective Chanceries.
“We look forward to coming back here, for the eventual opening of your Chanceries,” Ratu Inoke said.
The ground-breaking ceremony and unveiling of the sign board also included the planting of a Betelnut tree and Namele Tree – representing the cultural and traditional bonding uniting our Pacific family.
