Thousands of people gathered at the National Stadium in Honiara, Solomon Islands this evening for the opening of the 54th Session of the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting.
The opening ceremony, led by the people of the nine provinces, highlighted Solomon Islands’ rich cultural heritage with traditional songs, dances, and gift presentations that warmly welcomed the visiting Heads of State, Prime Ministers, and senior government representatives.
Leaders from across the 18-member states, including Prime Minister Honourable Sitiveni Rabuka, gathered to mark the official opening of the region’s annual gathering.
Solomon Islands Prime Minister Honourable Jeremiah Manele highlighted the importance of Pacific solidarity, unity, and collective action in addressing the challenges faced by the region.
The Pacific Islands Forum Leaders meet annually to consider important matters concerning the region, develop collective responses to regional issues and deliver on their vision for a resilient Pacific Region of peace, security, social inclusion, and prosperity that ensure the Pacific people can lead free, healthy, and productive lives.
The meeting also provides an opportunity for Fiji to reaffirm its commitment to collective action on issues such as climate justice, sustainable ocean management, regional security, and economic resilience.
Tomorrow, the Leaders will meet behind closed doors for their annual dialogue and talanoa, among other important sideline events.
