Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs Hon. Lenora Qereqeretabua welcomed the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Fiji, H.E Zhou Jian, during a recent courtesy visit to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters in Suva.
The meeting looked at collaboration opportunities in the lead up to the upcoming 2025 China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers Meeting scheduled to be held from 28th to 29th May in the People’s Republic of China.
It highlighted the milestone 50th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Fiji and the People’s Republic of China. Both sides also reaffirmed their commitment to further deepen the bilateral relations and strategic cooperation which is based on mutual respect, shared goals and common interests.
The discussions included prospects for expanded cooperation in areas such as poverty alleviation, trade and tourism, agriculture, fisheries, and infrastructure development.
Hon. Qereqeretabua acknowledged China’s ongoing cooperation with Fiji, particularly through major initiatives such as the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade project. The meeting highlighted the progress of the project and the significant benefits it would bring to the communities once completed.
The Assistant Minister stated that the Ministry through its Fiji’s Embassy in Beijing-China will continue to collaborate with the Chinese Embassy in Suva to further advance the relations in shared priorities.
Ambassador Jian reaffirmed the People’s Republic of China’s commitment towards supporting Fiji’s national development priorities with focus on advancing the economic prosperity and sustainable development.
The meeting underscored the enduring partnership and friendship between the two nations which is demonstrated through the historic 50 years of diplomatic relations.
