The United Nations Development Programme – UNDP and Fiji expressed strong commitment to building an inclusive and responsive multilateral system that adapts to the evolving global challenges. This was conveyed yesterday as the Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable Lenora Qereqeretabua welcomed the UN Assistant Secretary-General, Assistant Administrator and Director, Bureau for External Relations and Advocacy of UNDP, Susan Brown – for her three-day official visit to Fiji.
Coinciding with the UN’s historic 80th anniversary, the visit symbolises UN and Fiji’s long-standing relations dating back to 1970, and our shared commitment to expand collaboration in fields of global peacekeeping and security, climate change, women and youth empowerment, gender equality, health, education, and outreach to rural and maritime communities, amongst others.
During her visit, Ms. Brown will engage in talanoa sessions with women and youth groups, and rural communities in Fiji to hear directly from them, enabling UNDP to best tailor responses to local needs.
Hon. Qereqeretabua in her remarks acknowledged the UN’s unwavering support to Fiji and the broader Pacific, reaffirming Fiji’s commitment to building dialogue, trust and solidarity in the Pacific Way.
The Assistant Minister briefed the delegation on the key challenges faced by Fiji and the Pacific region and collective commitment to building peace and security, resilience and sustainable future.
The deliberations also highlighted UNDP’s interest to elevate support through technical and capacity building initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods for all Fijians.
The Assistant Secretary General reiterated that her visit to Fiji will provide deeper understanding and insight into development challenges, and help identify innovative solutions to progress further support to Fiji and across the Blue Pacific.
