The Mission was pleased to support Fiji’s participation at the 4th EU-Indo Pacific Ministerial Forum in Brussels on 21 November.
Before the Forum, Hon. Qereqeretabua, Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, held key meetings with EU Officials, and visited the Fiji House in Brussels.
Since the launch of the EU Indo-Pacific Strategy in 2021, the EU Indo-Pacific Ministerial Forums have been an important platform to lay the groundwork for deeper ties, stronger partnerships and greater cooperation and collaboration between the EU and Indo-Pacific nations.
Approximately 70 countries from EU Member States, and the Indo-Pacific including Pacific island countries, participated in this 4th Edition, with the theme “Building together a resilient, prosperous and secure future”.
Three parallel roundtables provided an opportunity for participants to discuss ways to enhance cooperation and deepen solidarity in the areas of –
(i) Security priorities in the face of current geopolitical developments.
(ii) Shared prosperity, economic security, and digital connectivity.
(iii) Common endeavours for a clean and sustainable future.
Participating at the Roundtable on Security Priorities in the face of current geopolitical developments, reflecting on the poly-crisis of geopolitical competition in the Indo-Pacific, conflict, and evolving aspects of security — from traditional challenges to newer ones posed by digital technology and climate change. Hon. Qereqeretabua, addressed the need to continuously assess our positions and contributions to security and stability in our respective regions.
Fiji re-emphasised that the Pacific is a region of peace, harmony, security, social inclusion, and prosperity, enabling all Pacific people to lead free, healthy, and productive lives. Building on this, the recently endorsed Ocean of Peace Declaration, reaffirms our collective commitment to a secure, stable, and resilient Pacific, as well as our collective stance against all forms of external coercion and conflict, urging the wider international community to recommit to a rules-based world order, uphold human rights, and embrace diplomacy as the path to enduring global security.
Other Pacific Islands that were represented at the Forum included Solomon Islands (PIF Forum Chair), Samoa, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu, Republic of Marshall Islands.
The Mission is pleased to note that Cabinet has endorsed for the re-establishment of the Fiji Mission in Brussels. This will contribute to consistent engagements with the European Union.
Until the Fiji Mission in Brussels is formally established, the Mission in Geneva, continues oversight and representation at the EU.
