The Fiji–Japan partnership is advancing steadily, translating strong diplomatic ties into concrete development outcomes across critical sectors of the economy.
This was underscored during an introductory courtesy call between the Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Hon. Sakiasi Ditoka, and the newly appointed Japanese Ambassador to Fiji, His Excellency Hiroshi Tajima.
During the meeting convened this week (19.2.26) at the Ministry headquarters, Ambassador Tajima presented Hon. Ditoka with a congratulatory letter conveyed from Japan’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Toshimitsu Motegi.
Hon. Ditoka congratulated Ambassador Tajima on his appointment and reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation.
Japan and Fiji’s diplomatic relations are guided by the Lomatavata Kizuna Partnership, formally endorsed during Prime Minister Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka’s official visit to Japan last year following his meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Hon. Sanae Takaichi.
Hon. Ditoka acknowledged Japan’s longstanding support through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which has advanced Fiji’s socio-economic development and strengthened disaster risk reduction and resilient infrastructure.
The deployment of Fiji’s new Ambassador designate to Japan, His Excellency Kemueli Naiqama, is expected to further enhance diplomatic and economic engagement.
Ambassador Tajima outlined Japan’s continued commitment to supporting Fiji’s development priorities through key projects, including:
- A Disaster Response Multi-Purpose Vessel valued at (FJD $27.2 million)
- A Pharmaceutical Warehouse in Labasa valued at (FJD $2.2 million)
- Reconstruction of the Tamavua-i-Wai Bridge valued at (FJD $70 million)
- New cyclone-resilient classrooms for Lomaivuna High School and Ratu Sauvoli Memorial School valued at (FJD $913,000)
Ambassador Tajima expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome extended by the Government of Fiji and conveyed confidence that the partnership will continue to grow from strength to strength.
